Helping Preachers
practice a healthy rhythm of
Rest, Work and Play
Welcome to
United Methodists of Upper New York Compelling Preaching Initiative
Preachers: Rest. Work. Play.
The Compelling Preaching Initiative of the United Methodists of Upper New York is dedicated to embracing a powerful vision to revitalize preaching and nourish the spirits of pastors through helping Preachers practice a healthy rhythm of rest, work and play.
Supported by a generous $1.25 million grant
from Lilly Endowment Inc., our vision is simple yet profound: to help preachers embody a rhythm of rest, work, and play. Through immersive experiences, curated workshops, and intentional spaces for reflection, we aim to renew, restore, and inspire pastors, equipping them to continue their ministry of preaching.
Importance of Preaching
According to a Pew Research Center survey, about 82% of Americans say that listening to sermons is an important part of their religious experience.

among members.

Research suggests that taking breaks and engaging in leisure activities can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
Enhanced
Productivity
Regular breaks can help maintain focus and prevent burnout, ultimately leading to higher levels of productivity and job satisfaction.
Better Physical Health
Getting enough sleep and engaging in physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Improved Relationships
Quality time with loved ones strengthens bonds, improves social connections, and significantly boosts overall happiness and emotional well-being.
One study found that 75% of clergy members report feeling highly stressed.

Studies have shown that clergy members experience burnout at rates higher than the general population. Causes include heavy workloads, emotional demands, conflict within congregations, and feelings of isolation.
The result? decreased job satisfaction, physical and emotional exhaustion, and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Clergy members can benefit from healthy practices such as setting boundaries, seeking support from colleagues and mentors, taking regular time off and counseling.

Providing support for clergy members is crucial and can include offering resources for personal health, providing opportunities for rest and renewal, and creating a supportive community within the congregation.
Supporting clergy involves facilitating comprehensive wellness resources, fostering relaxation opportunities, and cultivating a nurturing community environment.
